Birmingham's first ever Balboa Immersion workshop

The Birmingham Swing Dancers and JustGottaSwing (BLDA) are sponsoring a joint workshop to bring you this exciting form of Swing dance.

Balboa is a form of swing dance that started as early as 1915 and grew in popularity in the 1930s and 1940s.  It is danced primarily in a close embrace.

Balboa is danced to a wide variety of tempos.  Because the basic step takes up such a small space, Balboa can be danced to fast music (over 300 beats per minute). Balboa is also danced to slow music (under 100 beats per minute), which allows more time for intricate footwork and variations.  Slow, moderate, fast, and super fast music, Baloa's versatility is exceptional!

Ever have trouble dancing swing to fast music?

Well, no matter what speed is too fast for you personally, Balboa is the answer!

Feature Instructors: Corey & Susan Manke

Corey & Susan Manke have been dancing Lindy Hop for almost 8 years and Balboa for 5 years.  During this time, they have studied with many national & international instructors but have been most inspired by:  David Rehm, Nick Williams, Bobby White & Kate Hedin, Marty & Jen Lau and Marty Kempner & Valerie Salstrom.

Corey & Susan are some of the few balboa instructors in the southeast and have been teaching workshops & private lessons for 4 years.  Their focus is to demystify the dance of balboa and make dancers comfortable enough to mix into their regular social dancing.

Although they rarely compete, Corey & Susan just placed 3rd in The Amateur Stictly at the All Balboa Weekend 2009. ABW is the largest Balboa event in the world and had people compete from 12 countries.

Corey has been a finalist in the Jack & Jill for ABW 2007 and placed 3rd in 2008 and EBC 2006 & 2008 and placed 2nd in the Jack & Jill for the Harvest Moon Melee.  Susan is shy and doesn't like competing, but she is working on her competition mojo. Together, they have placed 7th at ABW & EBC 2008 in Amateur Strickly Balboa.
